Preventing Gas Exposure with a Data-Driven Approach to Safety

Blackline Safety Leader in Connected Gas Detection & Lone Worker Safety February 16, 2021

DSC_0088One of the United Kingdom’s (UK’s) foremost landfill site operators, Enovert manages more than 2.3 million tonnes of waste each year. In addition to providing safe and efficient disposal of waste, Enovert also produces renewable energy from biogas formed within its landfills. Enovert’s team leads this process, regularly extracting landfill gas for renewable energy generation. These gases are primarily comprised of methane, making potential exposure a constant threat to worker safety.

To protect its people from significant exposure, Enovert has invested heavily in gas detection solutions to ensure workers are notified of any gas hazards in their environment. But this is just one part of Enovert’s larger strategy for ensuring holistic workplace safety excellence. Enovert took a more macro approach to its safety programme by drawing upon data collected from its employee-worn devices in order to enhance its visibility of methane gas hazard levels and the gas capture rate across its landfills.

This strategy equips Enovert with real-time and historical data to investigate opportunities and threats on its worksites, helping uncover insights such as where and when gas exposure threats are most present within a certain duration. Through this approach, Enovert has been able to make fluid adjustments to day-to-day operations as well as larger shifts to work practices — all informed by the common objectives of mitigating gas exposure risks and enhancing worker confidence while on the job.

The Role Data and Safety Play in Sustainability

In addition to worker safety, this data-centric approach to gas detection also supports the Enovert’s sustainability goals. As Enovert remains in synergy with the UK’s initiative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the company uses its gas detector data proactively to track and increase its gas capture rate across all sites. These leading practices ensure operations remain safe and exceed compliance standards. Data collected regularly contributes to Enovert’s sustainability studies and also plays a key role in its reporting to the Environmental Agency.

As a result of using gas detector-derived data to inform and empower decision making, Enovert's landfill sites operate to the highest standards of safety and environmental compliance. These practices ensure the safe and secure disposal of waste and the generation of essential electricity to power 75,000 homes across the UK responsibly.

“Data collection and analysis is the present and future of the industrial sector. With the data we’re able to collect, track and analyse, we can respond and adapt quickly if there is a risk of gas exposure, and also look back to take steps to mitigate that risk in the future. Data is a driving force in keeping our people safe and supporting our commitment to the environment.”
