Mobile App UX & UI Designer (Calgary, Alberta)

We are looking for an experienced UX/UI designer who can take ownership of our Blackline Connect app and related mobile solutions. Blackline Connect provides a fit-for-work survey, contact tracing, and lone worker monitoring for businesses.

The ideal candidate is a passionate, collaborative, and learning oriented designer who wants to create a best-in-class safety app for iOS and Android. They leverage data-driven decision making, using qualitative and quantitative data to create ideal outcomes.

You will own every aspect of the mobile app’s design. Working across the entire product lifecycle, you will define product requirements and validate them with customer research. Using a variety of UX methods, you will identify key user challenges and come up with innovative and delightful design solutions that empower consumers to love their Blackline app experience. You’ll be working closely with internal product managers and our software development team in an agile environment.

The successful candidate will have at least 4 years of design experience and a degree or diploma in a related field. Your portfolio should show evidence of your entire creative process, from ideation, prototyping and iteration through to polished design and shipped product.

 Where you’ll make an impact:
  • Defining the UX strategy, vision, customer journey and mock-ups for Blackline’s mobile app
  • Developing detailed storyboards, concept diagrams, user interface sketches, wireframes, mock-ups, and prototypes
  • Conducting user research and usability tests to discover customer needs and to validate your solutions with customers
  • Creating robust, consistent, pixel perfect GUIs for iOS and Android smartphones and tablets
  • Working closely with software developers as you build, iterate, and ship product improvements
  • Working with and building upon Blackline’s visual design language and brand guidelines
  • Building relationships with stakeholders, working collaboratively with marketing and business partners
  • Strategizing measurement plans that validate design hypotheses and advance business and user goals

Responsibilities

  • Strong understanding of visual design principles, such as typography, colour, layout, composition, etc.
  • Excellent digital graphic design skills.
  • Experience designing user interfaces for both one app platform (iOS or Android) and responsive web.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to communicate design intent/rationale to software developers, product managers, and other internal stakeholders.
  • App coding experience is beneficial but not necessary.
  • Familiarity with working in an Agile or Scrum environment beneficial but not necessary.

What We're Looking For

We’re looking for a designer who:

  • Has experience in designing user interfaces for iOS and/or Android, plus responsive web
  • Has experience in UX research and interface design, including a strong working knowledge of research methods and applications
  • Has excellent digital design skills - must be proficient in Adobe Suite (XD, Illustrator, Photoshop)
  • Shows strong written and verbal communication skills to communicate design intent/rationale to software developers, product managers, and other internal stakeholders
  • Demonstrates a strong understanding of visual design principles, such as typography, colour, layout, composition
  • Has a strong attention to detail — in your cover letter, tell us your favorite fictional character

Required Qualifications

  • Diploma or bachelor’s degree in design related studies
  • A portfolio demonstrating user experience and user interface design work specifically related to mobile application design
  • 4+ years industry experience
  • App development experience is an asset but not required
  • Familiarity with working in an Agile or Scrum environment is an asset but not required
